Islam ’s Foundation Stone.

The foundation stone of the grand edifice of Islam is the Quran. The Quran is the book revealed to Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and his own life is its practical illustration.

The Quran can neither be understood not implemented if it is in any way separated from its practical embodiment – the life-example of the Prophet.

This is clear not only from the unambiguous statements of the Quran but can also be appreciated by ordinary common sense.

The Quran, for instance, simply orders us to perform salat and pay zakat. In what way to perform salat, how many times and with how many cycles (rak‘ats); after how much time and in what percentage to pay zakat – all this was taught to us by our beloved Prophet about whom the Quran tells us that Allah not only revealed to him the text of the Quran but also its understanding and meaning (hikmah):

He does not speak from desire; whatever he says (or does) is revealed to him.        (53:3-4)

That is why the Quran lays down that the two referents (which indeed are one – the theoretical combined with the practical) for believers are Allah and His Messenger:

Obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in charge of your affairs and if a difference arises among you concerning something, refer it to Allah and the Messenger (of Allah). (4:59)

In the history of Islam, the most deceptive and pernicious fitnah (mischief, disruption) that has been resorted to from time to time to erode the basis of Islam is to separate the Book of Allah from the sunnah of the Prophet. This the story from the fitnah of khalq al-Quran to various movements of inkar al-sunnah (denial of sunnah). This is used as a clever device for freedom from shariah through arbitrary interpretation of the Quran. The Prophet, under the foreknowledge granted to him by Allah predicted the rise of this fitnah. Here are two relevant ahadith:

“Said the Prophet (SAW), ‘I have left with you two things; never shall you go astray if you stick to them, Allah’s Book and the sunnah of his Messenger.” (Muwatta, Imam Malik)

“Hearken, I have been given the Quran and another thing like it. Beware that in time certain people will arise with their bellies full, they will recline on their soft settees and tell you to confine yourselves to the Quran alone; take that as lawful which it calls lawful and accept that as unlawful which it calls unlawful. Hearken whatever Allah’s Messenger declares as unlawful is unlawful in the same way and in the same degree as that which is decreed so by Allah.”
